What is Base64 Encoding & How Does the Math Work?
Base64 is a binary-to-text encoding algorithm designed according to RFC 4648 to represent raw binary data in an ASCII string format. It takes 3 bytes of binary data (24 bits) and breaks them into 4 groups of 6 bits each. Each 6-bit index (ranging from 0 to 63) maps directly to a 64-character alphabet consisting of uppercase letters (A-Z), lowercase letters (a-z), digits (0-9), and two symbols (+ and /).
Why Base64 is Crucial for Web Architecture
- Safe HTTP Transport: Raw 8-bit bytes can be corrupted or mangled when passed through legacy SMTP mail relays, JSON payloads, or HTTP query parameters. Base64 guarantees intact transmission.
- Inline HTML & CSS Data URIs: Small PNG icons, SVGs, and web fonts can be embedded directly into HTML/CSS stylesheets to reduce DNS lookups and eliminate extra HTTP roundtrips.
- Cryptographic Keys & Signatures: Public SSL certificates (PEM format), JWT authorization tokens, and SHA-256 hashes are standardized as Base64 strings.
- URL-Safe Base64: For URL query parameters, '+' is replaced with '-' and '/' is replaced with '_', avoiding percent-encoding conflicts.
Step-by-Step: How to Encode & Decode Base64 Online
- Open the free Base64 Encoder & Decoder tool.
- Type or paste your raw text, JSON snippet, or binary string in the input box.
- Toggle between Encode (Text → Base64) or Decode (Base64 → Clean Text).
- Click Copy Output to clipboard or download as text.
